And just like that, we’ve found ourselves on the

And just like that, we’ve found ourselves on the legendary Ruta 40! Stretching over 5,000 km (3,100 mi) from north to south of Argentina, this is the longest road in South America and one of the longest in the world. Patagonia’s section of Ruta 40 is long, straight, relentlessly windy, and almost eerily empty. The sky feels bigger out here, and the plains stretch endlessly to the horizon—only broken by distant mountains and the occasional wandering guanaco. Some call this landscape boring, but there’s a raw beauty to it—especially when you think about the sheer scale of it all, and the fact that you’re just a tiny dot riding through it on a motorcycle. For now, we’re heading 1,500 km south towards Ushuaia, mostly on pavement, but we will surely find a bit of dirt and gravel on our way for some additional fun! 🏍️💨 -

Once we got our bikes, we wasted no time and headed straight south towards Ushuaia—trying to avoid the worst of the cold. Spoiler: we somewhat succeeded.
The first two days were just a bit of a grind on a boring Chilean highway, but we finally made a proper stop near Pucón to check out Villarrica, one of Chile’s most active volcanoes. From there, we crossed into Argentina for the first time on this trip and started our journey to "the end of the world" on the legendary Ruta 40. -

We hoped to get our motorcycles just a few days af

We hoped to get our motorcycles just a few days after landing in Chile, but we ended up waiting almost two weeks for them. First, they were delayed in New Zealand because the airport X-ray machine stubbornly insisted that one of the bikes had a lithium battery. 🤨 It didn’t, of course.
Then, instead of flying straight to Santiago, our bikes decided to take a little tour of U.S. airports for no apparent reason. 🤔 When they finally arrived, we were able to pick them up ourselves—no forwarder needed! The process was relatively simple but a bit slow. Once the crates finally emerged from the warehouse, we had to put the bikes back together. We had removed the front wheels and handlebars to make the crates as small as possible (and save some money). Normally, this would be a straightforward process… except we didn’t realize the wheels were in the wrong crates. So we spent hours trying to fit the wrong wheel onto the wrong bike. 😅 But in the end, the bikes were back together and started up on the first try. 💪 And now we can finally start our new adventure! 🤩 ➡️ First destination: Ushuaia aka The End of the World! -

Just a few days before crating the bikes for South

Just a few days before crating the bikes for South America, we managed to book a spot for an off-road training session with @birchynz and @brandon_youell. Yan spent two days practising in the dirt and mud, surrounded by amazing New Zealand scenery and great people. No doubt, there will be plenty of roads in South America to refine and keep working on the techniques he’s learned. Huge thanks to Chris and Brandon for an awesome time and all the valuable lessons! You don’t need to be an enduro pro to ride around the world, but knowing a few off-road basics can make a huge difference in bike control, terrain awareness, and overall safety. That’s why we highly recommend doing off-road training before heading out on a big trip—especially if you haven’t ridden much outside of pavement. And even if you already have some experience or have done a few trainings, taking one just before a big adventure can be a great refresher. You might also pick up a few new tricks and techniques to practice on the road. Plus, you always meet great people! -

Time to start a completely new adventure! From Japan, we flew back to Australia for a short break and to prep for the next leg of our journey. At the start of 2024, we bought a CRF300L and a WR250R in New Zealand and spent four months riding across the country. We knew these were the bikes we wanted for our next trip, so we decided to store them in Auckland for a few months before shipping them by plane to Santiago de Chile. South America, here we come! -

It gave us a better, and more complete understanding of the country—its people, history, culture, and challenges. Japan is a great place for a motorcycle trip
Here are a few reasons why: 🛣 The mountain and coastal roads feel like they've been built for motorcyclists. ✅️It’s one of the safest countries to travel in. If you've never been on an international solo motorcyle trip before, then Japan could be a good place to start. 🏍Unsurprisingly, motorcycles are a big part of the culture. Japanese castles are instantly recognizable with their unique design. There used to be thousands of them across Japan, serving as military fortresses and centers of power. Today, about 100 remain—most are modern reconstructions, but many use traditional materials and techniques. Only 12 castles are considered originals. This one is Kiyosu Castle, near Nagoya. It’s a reconstruction built in 1989, but the original played a key role in guarding important crossroads between Kyoto and Kamakura. And that’s about as much of a history lesson as we can manage because, honestly, Japanese castle history gets complicated VERY fast. Changing lords, shifting allegiances, betrayals, assassinations, inheritance battles—this is a whole new level of political complexity and intrigue. -
